Abstract

The text analyzes the role of tales in oral literature, highlighting the strong presence of the marvelous, an element that awakens fascination due to the creative and symbolic way in which it is constructed. These tales fulfill important social functions, such as educating, transmitting values ​​and guiding ways of coexistence, presenting events that surpass human logic and cause ruptures with the natural order. The perception of the marvelous varies according to the cultural background, tradition and empirical and scientific knowledge of each reader, directly influencing their interpretation.

The study aims to examine the wonderful events present in the short story The Children of Cobra Bona, by Lourenço do Rosário. The investigation sought to understand in what context the wonderful manifests itself in the narrative. It was observed that the wonderful elements are interpreted in a relative way, depending on the age and cultural references of the reader.

The analysis shows that the wonderful appears associated with the unknown and the extraordinary, exemplified in the initial episode in which an elderly woman is fertilized by a snake and gives birth to two children — a fact that defies reason and raises different interpretations. Other events, such as the existence of the seven-headed giant and his death, reinforce the break with normality and the emotional impact generated by the narrative.( TRADUÇAO NOSSA)
